We believe the fun and freedom of riding your own bike is something everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. People who are unable to operate a traditional bike can now share this experience, thanks to the Amtryke adaptive tricycle.
These unique trykes are designed to accommodate riders of all ages and a myriad of physical and/or developmental challenges.
Recipients, parents and therapists report that the Amtryke adaptive tricycle provides increased strength, mobility and coordination as well as self-confidence and positive peer interaction. That all adds up to great exercise, the opportunity to be outdoors, and just plain fun. Our passion is to create a world where everyone who wants to can ride!
To date, over 40,000 Amtrykes have been provided across the United States. The majority of these trykes are purchased by volunteer-led AMBUCS chapters around the country and donated free of charge to children or Veterans in their own communities. If that’s a passion you can get behind, join a chapter, build a chapter, or encourage your chapter to participate.
Amtryke, LLC is fully owned and operated by National AMBUCS, a nationwide 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to inspiring mobility & independence. View the Amtryke Store.

The Amtryke fills the need of every child to have a bike—just like their siblings and friends. Many riders not previously considered capable of riding a bike will be successful riding an Amtryke. Our trykes are designed to look like bikes, not medical equipment, and to be age appropriate.
Parents tell us all the time about how the Amtryke has improved their kid’s life. It’s not just the obvious benefits of exercise but also more subtle things like improved family and peer activity inclusion as well as a sense of empowerment, self-reliance and freedom.
The Amtryke isn’t magic, it’s just a very useful tool. Because children should only use the Amtryke with adult supervision, improvements are almost always in direct correlation with a parent or guardian’s commitment to providing opportunities for their child to ride.
Not every child with different abilities needs an Amtryke. Some kids do very well with a tryke from a big box retailer. For kids that only need a little help, we sell foot assists and hand assists that can be used with most bikes or trykes.
However, the vast majority of kids that cannot ride a bike or tryke from a regular retailer CAN ride one of ours. There are many reasons why, but here are the three most important:
- Most of our bikes employ a fixed drive, or ‘fixie.’ The fixed drive doesn’t allow coasting so whenever the tryke is in motion, the pedals are in motion for full therapeutic effect. It also works on a mechanical level to help a child make a full pedal rotation.
- We make classic foot pedaled trykes, ones that can be peddled with just the hands and others that are pedaled using both hands and feet.
- We offer an impressive array of adaptive accessories.
Adaptive tricycles are expensive. AMBUCS is a nonprofit so ours tend to be less expensive than most. But we understand that most families that include a child who would benefit from an Amtryke are under financial strain due to medical and therapy bills. We can help!
If you think your child would benefit from an Amtryke adaptive tricycle, there are three ways to get one:
- The fastest and easiest way is to simply purchase one. Visit Amtryke Store or call us at 800-838-1845 x116. Not everyone needs a charitable intervention and if that’s you, thanks, your purchase will help fund a tryke for a needy child!
- The second way is to reach out to your local AMBUCS chapter to request help. Please remember that our chapter members are all volunteers that do this in their spare time because they’re wonderful people.
- If there isn’t a chapter close to you or your local chapter is unable to help, your child can go on the National Amtryke Wish List. Every child on the Wish List receives an Amtryke, but it can take up to two years. If you are willing to help fundraise, the process goes much quicker.
If you are reaching out to a chapter or placing your child on the Wish List, the first step is to get the three required documents filled out.

Adults with challenges to mobility and independence often struggle to find a means of exercise that works for them. Many try bike riding but face the challenge of getting it up to speed quickly enough to stay upright.
The Amtryke operates from a tricycle platform with the goal of getting a rider balanced and feeling secure.
Amtryke riders will increase cardio function, build strength and experience the outdoors in a new way, all of which can impact overall health and fitness. Not to mention the opportunity to ride with family and friends!
We offer a wide variety of adult-sized Amtrykes: Traditional upright-position trykes and recumbent street-style trykes for high functioning riders and trykes that offer full trunk support and rear-steering for riders who need more assistance.
Adult riders can purchase an Amtryke directly or, if charitable assistance is needed, can go on the Wish List to wait for funding. Everyone who goes on the Wish List receives an Amtryke, but the wait can be up to two years.

Are you one of the many Veterans who bravely fought to protect our country and now face life changing challenges? AMBUCS believes you should have every opportunity to engage in the active lifestyle you enjoyed prior to your service.
We understand that some wounds are visible and some are not. If you are unable to operate a traditional bike, for whatever reason, the Amtryke adaptive tricycle may be for you.

These trykes can be hand or foot powered and provide the stability and support often required for a Veteran to return to bike riding.
From sleek road trykes for those who just need help with balance to full trunk support, leg assists and hand assists for more involved riders, the Amtryke has our nation’s heroes covered!
Here are some remarkable letters of support from therapists, staff at the VA, Veteran Amtryke recipients and AMBUCS members we gathered while applying for an Adaptive Sports Grant from the VHA.
