Marquette, MI — On the weekend of August 24-25, 2024, the Marquette Chapter of AMBUCS came alive with enthusiasm and purpose as we hosted two impactful events aimed at enhancing mobility for individuals with disabilities, both children and adults.
The weekend kicked off with the Amtryke Evaluation and Fitting for Therapists (AEFT) Training at the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA). With invaluable support from Al and Cheryl LeMieux of the Grand Rapids Chapter, who transported a trailer full of Amtryke Adaptive Tricycles, and our dedicated trainer Christy Thompson, PT, DPT, DHSc, who flew in specifically for this event, local therapists gathered to gain insights into the evaluation and fitting process for Amtrykes.
The AEFT training was a comprehensive, hands-on experience where nine therapists learned how to properly assess individuals’ needs and fit them with the appropriate Amtryke model. Community members who were interested in an Amtryke or who already owned an Amtryke volunteered their time in the afternoon so therapists could practice the evaluation skills they learned in the morning. The event was not just an educational session; it was a collaborative effort to enhance the capabilities of our local therapists, equipping them with the tools to evaluate and fit individuals across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for adaptive trykes.
The following day, the excitement continued with our “Try-A-Tryke” Day at Marquette Commons. Utilizing Al’s trailer of trykes, community members were invited to experience the joy of riding a tryke firsthand. Families and individuals arrived eager to test ride the trykes and discover how these innovative bikes could change their lives.
The turnout was fantastic, with many participants trying out multiple models. We measured and fit 14 enthusiastic riders for their very own Amtrykes. The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing gratitude for the opportunity to engage in physical activity in a supportive environment.
As a result of the AEFT and “Try-A-Tryke” Day fittings, we are thrilled to announce that we have ordered 15 new Amtrykes, 4 of which have already been assembled and delivered to riders. In addition, 4 more orders have been generated by therapists who attended the AEFT from other communities in the region.
