National AMBUCS turned 103 years old this year, and true to tradition, members from across the country came together in Des Moines, Iowa, for the annual National Conference. For more than a century, this gathering has been about more than business; it is about connection. Members, staff, and leadership all coming together to share ideas, celebrate accomplishments, and remember why this mission matters. This year, the conference lived up to every bit of that legacy.
The week officially began on Wednesday, July 23, with a special First-Timers Meeting, led by Donna Shattuck, for those experiencing their first AMBUCS National Conference. That evening, the Opening Night Dinner set a joyful tone. Hosted by National President Donna Carlton-Vish, the event reflected Donna’s love for hot-air balloons and her theme for the year: “Upward and Outward.” Guests snapped photos in a real balloon basket before being captivated by keynote speaker Michael Glen, the world’s first paraplegic hot-air balloon pilot, whose remarkable story of perseverance and courage left the audience in awe. The night ended on a high note as Donna’s brother, Dean Carlton, took to the DJ booth for a lively and unforgettable set.
Thursday began with the National Big Hat Club meeting, followed by the first General Business Session. Flags were presented, pledges recited, and with those traditions complete, National President Donna Carlton-Vish officially called the session to order. CEO Jessica Walls introduced the AMBUCS resource center team staff, conference volunteers, and gave roll call. Chapters from across the country (51 in total), stood to be recognized. The annual report followed, as well as a keynote from Mary K. Hoodhood. Mary K is the founder of Kids’ Food Basket and a friend of AMBUCS. She shared her inspiring journey of turning personal adversity after a spinal cord injury into a lifelong mission to fight childhood hunger.
Later, the always-popular Big Hat Lunch and Auction raised an impressive of $15,009 for AMBUCS programs. Leadership transitioned as Terry Lanham stepped into the role of Big Hat President, with Leo Hull as Vice President and Jenny Clement-Shaw as Secretary/Treasurer.
That afternoon, members gathered in the Exhibit Hall to begin building Amtrykes that would be given away later in the week. This session, 25 Amtrykes destined for Iowa riders, schools, and hospitals, was just one of many moments that highlighted the power of teamwork at the heart of AMBUCS.
Friday began with Regional Caucuses, a chance for chapters to gather, conduct business, and recognize local accomplishments. At the Foundation Program, National President-Elect Gordon Shaw honored William L. White Donors, members who gave $1,000 or more in the past year, and celebrated those who reached the $10,000 milestone, earning a Named Scholarship in honor or memory of someone special.
One of the most moving moments came when the National Therapist of the Year, Michelle Markov, spoke about the incredible impact Amtrykes have on families. Her personal and professional reflections reminded everyone in the room why they do this work.
The afternoon shifted into learning mode with a wide variety of education sessions including topics on Amtrykes, scholarships, fundraising, marketing, leadership Vocational Services, and more. These education presentations are available on the HUB for review and study. The day wrapped up with the Achievement Awards Ceremony. Winners included Mountain Metro (Newsletter), Tyler Area (Visibility), Noon Network (Community Service), and Lititz Chapter (Charities) with an outstanding $10,172 given per member.
Saturday began bright and early with the 20th Annual Trek 4 Trykes. Over 100 walkers laced up their sneakers and set out on a misty Iowa morning, raising funds to provide Amtrykes for riders on the National Wish List. Together, they raised $17,059, proving that every step makes a difference.
The morning General Session followed, opening with the presentation of colors and the national anthem. Then came a powerful keynote by photographer Angela Yoder, founder of the “Let Them Stare” project, who is changing how the world sees people with disabilities. Her message was bold, heartfelt, and unforgettable.
In the afternoon, anticipation reached a peak: the Great Amtryke Giveaway. Over several emotional hours, 25 Amtrykes were given to Iowa riders and representatives from schools and hospitals. Volunteers, therapists, mechanics, and runners worked side by side to ensure each tryke fit perfectly. Families and members cheered as children and adults alike took their first rides. The room was filled with happy tears and high-fives, a true testament to how one gift can ripple through a whole community.
The conference ended with an evening of celebration, beginning with the President-Elect’s Reception, followed by the formal procession of national officers and the President’s Dinner. Dressed to the nines, members applauded as two of the organization’s most prestigious awards were presented: Kevin Lust of the Springfield Chapter was named Project Manager of the Year, and Amy Zimmerman of Greenebucs was named Ambuc of the Year.
The night also marked the transition of leadership. Outgoing National President Donna Carlton-Vish was honored for her extraordinary year of service. Matt Trainor of the Augusta Chapter was sworn in as National President-Elect, and Gordon Shaw of the Great Plains Chapter was installed as National President.
In his first address as President, Gordon expressed gratitude, enthusiasm, and a clear vision for the year ahead, focused on mentorship and growth.
From the first handshake to the last hug, the 2025 AMBUCS National Conference in Des Moines was a week filled with connection, inspiration, and service.
